UK Faces Mosquito Threat Amid Rising Temperatures

Date:

A heatwave expert has raised concerns about the ideal conditions that have emerged, potentially leading to a surge in mosquitoes. These blood-sucking insects, a common annoyance during summer, are prevalent not just abroad but also in the UK, which houses over 30 native species. As temperatures rise, experts warn that mosquitoes could become more active due to accelerated life cycles.

There are worries that mosquito species capable of transmitting diseases like dengue fever and Zika may establish themselves in the UK as the climate warms. Dr. Mojca Kristan, an assistant professor in medical entomology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), highlighted the current weather conditions in the UK as favorable for mosquitoes. Dr. Kristan emphasized the need for standing water to lay eggs, indicating that recent rainfall has provided suitable breeding grounds.

Although disease-carrying mosquito species are not firmly established in the UK, Dr. Kristan noted that diseases like dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika are already present in parts of Europe. Models suggest that London and its surroundings may support the endemic transmission of dengue fever by the 2060s due to climate changes.

While the risk of serious illness from UK mosquitoes is currently low, there is a looming threat from new disease-carrying species as the climate becomes more hospitable for mosquitoes. Warm weather can hasten the hatching of mosquito eggs, with female mosquitoes requiring blood for egg development.

To prevent mosquito bites, Dr. Kristan recommended using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves, and socks in the evening, as mosquitoes often target ankles for biting. Dengue fever can manifest flu-like symptoms, chikungunya can cause fever and severe joint pain, and Zika, while mild in most cases, poses risks during pregnancy, potentially leading to miscarriage or birth defects.
