A father tragically passed away due to excessive bleeding while resting on a bench after unintentionally falling asleep and getting stabbed by a knife concealed in his backpack.
The demise of 57-year-old Robert Brown led to a significant murder inquiry when he was discovered slouched on a bench near a canal pathway in Northampton during the previous summer. He had been last seen at a supermarket the day before, and a cyclist passing by noticed blood seeping through the bench’s crevices.
The distressing discovery around 6:30 am on August 1 prompted a large-scale police operation amid concerns of foul play. Authorities extensively searched the River Nene and apprehended three individuals on suspicion of murder. However, all were later released without charges.
An inquest revealed that Mr. Brown’s death likely resulted from a freak incident where he, in a drunken state, unintentionally rolled onto a knife stored in his backpack. It was suggested that he might have fallen into a deep slumber, causing the knife to pierce through the bag due to his weight.
The five-inch single-edged blade sliced through the bag and all layers of his coat before inflicting a 3cm wound on his arm, leading to severe blood loss. The murder investigation was dropped in February, with officers determining that the injury was most likely self-inflicted accidentally.
Senior coroner Anne Pember concluded the case as a “tragic accident.” Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison of Northamptonshire Police initially suspected foul play but later believed the incident was a tragic mishap, considering no motive for murder was found.
A post-mortem examination attributed Mr. Brown’s death to acute blood loss from a wound on his left upper arm. Family members described him as a lively individual with a generous heart, expressing deep sorrow over his passing but cherishing fond memories of his cheerful demeanor and caring nature.
The inquest ultimately ruled Mr. Brown’s death as accidental, bringing closure to the investigation into the unfortunate incident.
