“Report Reveals Discrimination Against Single Parents in UK Rentals”

Date:

Lucy Adams faced intrusive questioning when searching for a rental flat, including personal queries about her daughter’s father. The 38-year-old single parent from Witney, Oxon, expressed frustration at being asked invasive questions by landlords and agents, leading to financial discrimination due to her benefit status. Lucy recounted having to pay six months’ rent upfront and being denied property viewings by some landlords.

A new report, ‘Locked Out, Single Parent Discrimination in the UK Rental Sector,’ highlights the challenges faced by single parents like Lucy. The study surveyed 412 single parents, with 65% reporting discrimination during the rental process, such as being charged higher deposits or refused due to their status as single parents. The research also revealed higher child poverty rates among single parent renters on Universal Credit compared to two-parent families.

Ruth Talbot, the Founder of Single Parent Rights, emphasized the need for stronger legal protections and increased Local Housing Allowance to address the housing crisis facing single parents. The report calls for reforms to prevent discrimination and ensure fair access to housing for all families.

Nathan Caplan, a 48-year-old disabled single father, shared his struggles in finding suitable housing due to income requirements and discrimination based on his benefits status. Despite facing eviction threats, Nathan eventually secured a rental flat, but the financial strain led to health issues and job loss.

Another individual, Shakeel, recounted his experience of homelessness following a separation, highlighting the challenges faced by single parents in the rental market. A survivor of domestic abuse from Surrey described the difficulties of finding affordable housing while receiving disability benefits and raising children.

While the government has introduced measures like the Renters’ Rights Act to protect tenants, Single Parent Rights advocates for stronger enforcement and support to bridge the gap between rent and housing allowances. The ongoing housing crisis continues to impact single parents, underscoring the need for comprehensive solutions to ensure housing security for vulnerable families. Lucy Adams, after a four-year struggle, finally secured social housing, emphasizing the importance of stability and security for single parent households.
