Fatal Shooting at World Cup Fan Zone in California

Date:

A shooting at a popular World Cup “fan zone” in California has resulted in one fatality and another individual facing critical injuries, described as “life-threatening” by authorities.

The incident took place on Sunday at San Pedro Square in the San Francisco Bay Area, where large crowds had gathered for football “watch parties” amidst the World Cup festivities.

Although no World Cup matches were being shown during the shooting, with the day’s sole game ending around 2pm local time (9pm GMT), the situation turned grim.

San Jose police revealed that one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries classified as life-threatening. The authorities have initiated a homicide investigation, leading to the closure of several nearby streets.

The Bay Area has already hosted five World Cup matches, including a recent knockout game between Bosnia and the United States.

Following the shooting, an extensive police presence was observed in the area, with multiple police vehicles seen and emergency responders swiftly moving an injured individual on a stretcher away from the site. The affected area was cordoned off, and most establishments, including bars, were shut down as a precautionary measure.

An anonymous security guard recounted witnessing the distress of the injured person, noting visible blood around the neck and upper back. She mentioned ongoing discussions between the police, security personnel, and a few eyewitnesses at the scene.
