“Mental Health Crisis: 1 in 10 Children in England Need Treatment”

Date:

A recent data analysis has revealed that over one million children in England, approximately one in ten, were referred to, waiting for, or already undergoing treatment from mental health services. The Children’s Commissioner, Dame Rachel de Souza, emphasized the significant crisis facing young people’s mental health, with anxiety being the primary reason for referrals and a notable increase in demand for suspected autism and neurodevelopmental conditions.

According to Dame Rachel’s annual report, there were 1,048,965 children with active referrals to mental health services in the 12 months leading up to March 2025, marking a substantial increase from previous years. The report highlighted a government review that identified various factors contributing to the rise in demand for services, including heightened distress among young individuals and a trend of “medicalisation of distress.”

Referrals for suspected autism saw a significant surge, with a 47% increase, while referrals for other neurodevelopmental conditions and anxiety also rose. The report noted that younger children were more likely to be referred for neurodevelopmental conditions, especially suspected autism, while anxiety was the primary reason for referral among older children.

The report also highlighted concerning waiting times, with a weighted average waiting period of 128 days for children in need of treatment. A growing number of children had been waiting for longer than two years, indicating delays in accessing crucial mental health support.

Dame Rachel stressed the urgent need for improved mental health services and called for a holistic approach across government sectors to address the escalating demand. She emphasized the importance of providing timely and comprehensive support for children’s mental health in schools and communities to ensure their well-being.

The current situation was described as a significant challenge, with demand surpassing the capacity and resources of the mental health system. Dame Rachel urged for transformative actions and reforms in mental health strategies and special educational needs services to enhance outcomes for children and adolescents.
