The quantity of official duties carried out by royal family members has significantly decreased in recent years due to the adoption of a scaled-down monarchy approach. Records indicate that in the past year, working royals fulfilled 2,273 engagements, a notable decline from the 4,127 engagements completed in 2012, which marked the peak of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
Various factors have contributed to this reduced workload, including a decrease in the number of active royals and the health challenges faced by King Charles and Princess of Wales, both of whom battled cancer in 2024. Following their treatments, Charles and Kate gradually resumed their official responsibilities.
Furthermore, Prince William and Princess Kate have shifted their focus to long-term campaigns and prioritizing family time with their three children, resulting in around 16 weeks per year spent away from official duties during school breaks. Age has also played a role in the decreased engagements, with older royals like the Duke of Kent and the Duchess of Gloucester reducing their public appearances.
The decrease in working royals was particularly notable in 2020 and 2021 when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their royal roles and relocated to the United States. Additionally, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor withdrew from his duties due to allegations of maintaining a connection with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.
Comparisons have been drawn between the engagement numbers of King Charles and Queen Camilla and those of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at similar life stages, with the former completing 708 official engagements in the previous year. This contrasts with the 808 duties fulfilled by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 2003 when they were of similar ages.
The revelation about engagement figures coincided with the announcement that the Sovereign Grant, funded by taxpayers, is projected to increase to £100 million by 2027, up from £31 million in 2012 (equivalent to £45.8 million adjusted for inflation).
