“UK’s Longest-Serving Female Prisoner Approved for Release”

Date:

The Parole Board has given approval for the release of Maria Pearson, the UK’s longest-serving female prisoner. Pearson, aged 70, has been in prison for nearly 39 years since the 1986 murder of her ex-boyfriend’s new partner, Janet Newton. Initially sentenced to a minimum of 12 years before parole consideration, concerns over her behavior and public safety led to her extended incarceration.

Following Pearson’s successful tenth review, the Parole Board stated she no longer poses a significant risk to society. Describing the decision as “finely balanced,” the Board outlined strict conditions for Pearson’s release, including residence at a specified address, adherence to a year-long curfew monitored by electronic tagging, and avoidance of contact with Janet Newton’s family.

Despite assessments indicating a high risk of causing serious harm, the Parole Board’s decision to approve Pearson’s release on license came after almost four decades of imprisonment, surpassing the time served by infamous murderer Myra Hindley. The tragic events of 1986 saw Pearson fatally stab Janet Newton in a fit of jealousy, leading to her conviction for murder.

Pearson’s tumultuous relationship with her ex-partner and the subsequent murder marked a dark chapter in her history. Despite previous parole rejections and a history of contentious behavior during her time in custody, the recent decision to release Pearson has sparked mixed reactions, with concerns raised by Janet’s sister Lynn, who has consistently opposed Pearson’s release.

Pearson’s progress in prison, including participation in therapy programs and completion of skills training, was noted, alongside ongoing challenges in her interactions with staff. The Board acknowledged Pearson’s potential for harm in distressing situations but deemed the risk of serious violent reoffending low, citing her behavior over the years and the circumstances of the original offense.

Support for Pearson’s release came from her prison offender manager, lead clinical psychologist, and the operational manager of the enhanced offender management service, who all endorsed her readiness for the transition to the community.
