“Outcry Over Nigel Farage’s £2M Earnings Sparks Calls to Ban MPs’ Second Jobs”

Date:

Nigel Farage faced severe criticism for his significant outside earnings, with accusations of exploiting his position as a Member of Parliament (MP) while calls were made to prohibit second jobs for MPs. The leader of the Reform UK party received £270,000 for a mere 12 hours of work promoting gold bullion, adding up to over £2 million in earnings and gifts since assuming his role as MP for Clacton, alongside his MP salary of £98,599.

Various MPs from different political parties expressed astonishment at the permissibility of such practices and urged the government to prohibit secondary employment for MPs, except in exceptional cases. During a parliamentary debate, it was highlighted that Mr. Farage had disclosed 16 external sources of income since his election in July 2024, amounting to 140 days of paid work, despite his absence during the discussion.

Labour’s Richard Burgon, advocating for a ban on second jobs, emphasized that being an MP is a well-compensated responsibility, placing MPs among the top 5% of earners in the country. He stressed that the public elects MPs to represent their interests fully, not to pursue personal financial gains. The debate also shed light on Mr. Farage’s additional earnings, including £18,402 for a brief presentation stint on GB News.

Critics argued that MPs should dedicate their time solely to their constituents and parliamentary duties, rather than engaging in multiple lucrative external activities. The controversy surrounding Mr. Farage’s financial interests intensified following revelations of substantial earnings, including a sizable payment from a crypto billionaire, which he reportedly failed to disclose. Investigations are underway to ascertain if Mr. Farage violated parliamentary standards by not declaring certain financial benefits.

Efforts are being made to review and potentially amend regulations governing MPs’ earnings from external sources, with a particular focus on the number and nature of secondary jobs permissible for MPs. The debate around this issue continues to highlight concerns regarding the potential conflicts of interest and the prioritization of personal gain over public service among elected representatives.

The Commons Committee on Standards is actively examining the existing regulations concerning MPs’ external income, reflecting the ongoing scrutiny and debate surrounding this contentious issue. Requests for comments from Reform UK regarding these matters have been made.
