Dozens of British travelers were stranded at Gatwick Airport for up to eight hours due to issues with a meet-and-greet service they had arranged through a price comparison website. Upon their return from their trips, they found their vehicles missing, later discovering them in various locations such as a junkyard, hotel site, or left in the airport’s short stay car park after a frantic search.
Some of the affected individuals reported missing items like blue badges and vehicle documents, with their cars being returned dirty and low on fuel. One traveler, Lauren James, 35, from Worcester, recounted her distress upon realizing her car was seemingly stolen, leading to a chaotic situation with multiple people involved. She vowed never to use a meet-and-greet service again after her harrowing experience.
Another traveler, Dani, 34, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, faced a similar ordeal when her car was not where it was supposed to be, ending up at an abandoned junkyard with missing documents. The group of affected travelers, including Damien Ford, 44, from Hayes, West London, had to endure a long and frustrating search for their vehicles, with some discovering their cars in unexpected locations and in disarray.
Despite reporting the issue to the police, the travelers were informed that it was a civil matter as they had willingly handed over their keys. They are now calling for Gatwick Airport to take more action against rogue parking companies to prevent such incidents in the future.
Officials from Gatwick Airport acknowledged the presence of unauthorized parking companies offering valet and meet-and-greet services and highlighted their collaboration with authorities to address the issue. They advised passengers to opt for official airport parking services or reputable alternatives, emphasizing the importance of thorough research before booking parking through comparison sites.
