Two England supporters, who had previously attended the World Cup in Mexico City, shared their harrowing ordeal. Jo Lewis and Gary Taylor described the frightening moments they encountered at an official FanFest, urging caution to fellow Three Lions fans heading to England’s round of 16 match.
Jo expressed her fear for her safety while Gary, a seasoned attendee of Spurs and England matches, labeled Mexico City as the most distressing experience he has ever had. The duo recounted the chaotic scenes in the Fanfest, emphasizing the lack of proper policing, security, and organization compared to the United States.
During their visit, they witnessed the tragic deaths of three Mexicans due to suffocation during celebrations post a victory over Ecuador. Over a million fans flooded the streets, leading to severe overcrowding and crushing incidents. Jo and Gary stressed the importance of awareness among England fans traveling to Mexico for the upcoming game.
Jo, 44, recounted the terrifying moments of being swept into a congested area, separated from Gary, causing panic and distress. Gary, 64, described the overwhelming crowds and chaos they encountered in Mexico City, highlighting the extreme conditions they faced.
Despite the challenges, the couple remains committed to attending all England games, with tickets secured for the potential final in New York on July 19. They will be joined by an estimated 5,000 Three Lions supporters, anticipating a passionate and frenzied atmosphere during the upcoming match in Mexico. England is scheduled to arrive two days before the game, with previous incidents of Mexico fans disrupting opponents’ rest with fireworks outside their hotel.
