The performance of the national football team, the Three Lions, has not elevated the country’s image. Before each game, the world is subjected to what is deemed by many as one of the least inspiring national anthems ever composed.
This year, with an expanded World Cup format, the anthem sounds even more lackluster, now ranked the worst among 48 anthems. The New York Times’ Athletic website placed God Save The King at the bottom of its list of all 48 World Cup anthems.
In comparison to anthems like those of France, Brazil, and the Netherlands, the national anthem of this country falls short. Anthems such as Colombia’s spirited call to action and Curacao’s lively saxophone performance outshine God Save The King. Locally, anthems like Flower Of Scotland, Wales’ Land Of Our Fathers, and Ireland’s The Soldiers’ Song evoke strong emotions, making God Save The King seem uninspiring in comparison.
The anthem’s lyrics are considered dull and meaningless by many. A significant portion of the population neither supports the monarchy nor believes in God, leading to questions about the anthem’s relevance to modern society.
Efforts are being made to introduce a new anthem for the nation, with suggestions ranging from Billy Bragg’s A New England to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The aim is to replace the current anthem with a more meaningful and inspiring song that resonates with the population.
Various options, including classic hymns and contemporary songs, are being considered for a potential new national anthem. The goal is to select a song that encapsulates the national spirit and values in a more relevant and engaging manner.
