“New Law Requires Life-saving Allergy Pens in Schools”

Date:

Life-saving allergy pens will be required in schools starting this September, as per new statutory guidelines announced on Monday. The guidelines also mandate allergy training for teachers and the implementation of clear allergy policies and healthcare plans in all schools.

Government officials stated that the new guidelines will ensure consistent standards nationwide, guaranteeing that every school is equipped with the necessary training, plans, and adrenaline devices.

These changes are a result of the advocacy efforts of Helen and Peter Blythe, following the tragic death of their five-year-old son, Benedict, from a severe allergic reaction to cow’s milk at school in 2021.

Helen Blythe, co-Founder of the Benedict Blythe Foundation and Benedict’s mother, expressed that the release of the guidelines signifies a significant advancement in allergy safety for children and families. She emphasized the importance of this milestone in protecting future generations of children.

Education Minister Olivia Bailey emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and inclusion of every child, highlighting the impact of “Benedict’s Law” in providing essential training, plans, and equipment to keep all children safe.

Sarah Knight, chief executive of the Allergy Team, welcomed the guidelines as a crucial step forward in enhancing the protection of children with allergies in schools.

While Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the school leaders’ union NAHT, appreciated the guidelines, he raised concerns about staffing and funding challenges. He stressed the need for adequate stock of adrenaline auto-injectors in schools and proper management of their storage, disposal, and re-ordering processes.

The draft guidelines were initially introduced in March and underwent a consultation process before being finalized.
