“Iran Missile Attack on Ships in Hormuz Strait”

Date:

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly launched two missiles targeting commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. According to a US official speaking to Axios Global Affairs Correspondent Barak Ravid, two commercial ships sustained significant damage but there were no reported casualties. The reports have not been independently verified by the Mirror.

Tensions between the US and Iran escalated following joint airstrikes by the US and Israel on key Iranian sites on February 28. However, a recent peace agreement between the two countries aims to reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz and ensure Iran disposes of its enriched uranium reserves, crucial for potential nuclear weapons development.

On June 17, the US and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to end the conflict within 60 days. Efforts are now underway to establish a long-term peace deal, restore global shipping in the vital Strait of Hormuz, and address ongoing disputes related to Iran’s nuclear program.

As part of the MoU, Iran committed to resuming merchant ship movements between the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman within 30 days at pre-conflict levels. In return, the US agreed to lift the naval blockade on Iran and restore shipping capacity to normal levels within 30 days of the MoU signing.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, responsible for facilitating 20% of global oil trade, caused widespread concern in global markets during the conflict.
