“Teen Tragically Dies in River Wye During DofE Trip”

The passing of a teenager who lost his life in the River Wye during a Duke of Edinburgh excursion has been mourned by his family. Umar Dumbuya, a resident of London, tragically perished while participating in a DofE expedition in Glasbury, Powys, on June 30.

In a heartfelt statement shared through Dyfed-Powys Police, his family expressed profound sorrow at the loss of their son, brother, and grandson. They described Umar as a loving individual who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Fondly remembered for his passion for basketball, gym sessions, and quality time with loved ones, Umar’s kindness, warmth, and humor will forever be cherished.

The family emphasized the immense void left by Umar’s untimely death and requested privacy as they navigate through their grieving process. Emergency services were alerted to the situation at the River Wye in Glasbury when it was reported that the 18-year-old had entered the water and disappeared. A search and rescue operation, involving Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and mountain rescue teams, commenced until Umar’s body was recovered.

A representative from Duke of Edinburgh expressed deep sadness over the tragic drowning incident during the DofE expedition in Powys, Wales, extending thoughts and support to the family and all involved in the program. The organization pledged to offer full assistance by collaborating with the young person’s college and relevant authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the heartbreaking event.
