Starting July 8th, families traveling with children this summer will benefit from a new travel regulation at UK airports. Children aged eight and above are now permitted to use the eGates at 13 UK airports, streamlining the journey for families returning home. Previously, only travelers aged 10 and older could access the eGates, causing families with younger children to endure longer queues.
This adjustment in the age requirement is expected to facilitate approximately 1.5 million additional children passing through the electronic gates and re-entry points swiftly. Children must be at least 120cm tall to use the eGates efficiently alongside being aged eight or older for biometric scanner detection.
Alex Norris, the Minister for Border Security and Asylum, expressed that this change aims to simplify travel for families with young children, easing the return journey after vacations and allowing tourists more time to explore the country. Karen Dee, Chief Executive of AirportsUK, welcomed this development, stating that it will enhance the border process efficiency, reducing wait times and ensuring a pleasant experience for travelers.
The modification, introduced just in time for the summer holidays, impacts 13 major UK airports and aligns with the government’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) program, which utilizes eGates to scan passengers’ passports for expedited entry. Additionally, residents from several countries including Australia, Canada, Japan, and the US will also benefit from this airport change.
