“Uber Driver Sentenced to 16 Years for Sexual Assault”

Date:

An Uber driver has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for coercing a passenger into his vehicle and sexually assaulting her at knifepoint. Adam Daley, 33, encountered the victim and her friend outside a bar in Leicester city center on December 29 last year, offering to drive them home if they booked the trip through the Uber app. After dropping off one of the women, Daley drove the other woman, in her 20s, to a secluded lay-by.

During the ride, he made inappropriate remarks and asked invasive questions before stopping the car, claiming he needed to use the restroom. Instead, he demanded the woman move to the front seat, threatened her with a knife, and forced her to engage in a sexual act. Additionally, during the assault, Daley exposed the victim’s chest and touched her inappropriately.

Following the victim’s pleas to stop, Daley drove off, leaving her stranded at the lay-by on Soar Valley Way. The woman immediately contacted emergency services, leading officers to track down Daley’s white Toyota Auris using CCTV and ANPR cameras. Police apprehended him about an hour after the assault when they noticed his car stopped at a traffic light.

Leicestershire Police released footage showing officers removing Daley from the vehicle as he attempted to destroy evidence by smashing his mobile phone. Daley, a resident of Leicester, was convicted of rape, sexual assault, possession of a bladed weapon, and making threats of violence.

He was sentenced to 16 years in prison at Leicester Crown Court and also confessed to possessing indecent images of a child, discovered during a search of his mobile phone by authorities.

Despite Daley’s denial of the charges, forensic evidence linking the victim to him was found. Detectives uncovered that Daley had circled the victim multiple times after leaving her at the lay-by.

Authorities suspect that Daley may have assaulted other women while working as an Uber driver, urging potential victims to come forward. Detective Constable Matt Smith commended the victim for her quick action in contacting the police after the assault and reminded victims of sexual offenses to seek help and support.
