“New African Monkey Species Likweli Identified in Congo”

Date:

A distinctive new monkey species with vibrant orange lips has been officially identified in Africa, almost two decades after its initial sighting. This small primate, characterized by black fur and a long tail, belongs to the Colobus genus native to Africa. The species, named Colobus congoensis or Likweli, marks the fifth new African monkey species discovered in the last 75 years and was first encountered in 2008 within the Lomami Basin.

Initially spotted by two explorers capturing a glimpse of the monkey in the forest canopy, it was evident that this was a previously unknown species in the region. After the initial sighting in 2008, the Likweli monkeys were not observed again until November 2018. Subsequently, between 2018 and 2022, researchers recorded 114 sightings of the monkeys, although local communities displayed limited awareness of this new primate compared to other primates in the area.

According to a study published in the PLoS One journal, the new species features a unique dark glabrous face with a distinct patch of bare, pinkish to orange-cream skin surrounding the mouth area, extending from the upper lip to the nasal alae. The coloration and coverage of this patch vary among individuals, giving the monkey a distinctive “mask-like appearance” with black skin surrounding the patch and eyes.

Described as a rare and elusive species primarily found in high, dense canopy forests, the researchers advocating for its protection have recommended classifying it as endangered due to its limited habitat and population. The threat of increased hunting and habitat destruction further underscores the need for conservation efforts. The protection of the Lomami National Park, where most of the C. congoensis population resides, and community involvement in preserving the species are crucial for its survival.

The research team behind the discovery comprises experts from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United States, and Germany.
