UK faces cooldown this weekend before potential heatwave return

Date:

The upcoming weekend will see a slight drop in temperatures, but weather forecast models are indicating the likelihood of another heatwave next week. According to Met Office predictions, temperatures are expected to reach 28C in southern areas and 24C in northern regions tomorrow, with peak temperatures on Sunday projected to be around 26C in the south and 24C in the north.

This change in weather will mark the end of a 13-day period with temperatures consistently above 30C and may bring the UK’s third heatwave of 2026 to a close. An official heatwave is declared after temperatures exceed the heatwave threshold for three consecutive days, varying from 28C in the south-east to 25C in regions further away from the south-east.

Looking ahead, the GFS weather model hints at the possibility of a fourth heatwave with temperatures potentially reaching 30C or 31C in western areas next Friday, and up to 29C in Yorkshire. Maps for the following Saturday suggest highs of 33C in southern England, while parts of Wales and adjacent areas could see temperatures of 29C to 30C. The Midlands and East Anglia might experience highs of 32C.

Sunday of the upcoming week is anticipated to be the warmest day, with potential highs of 35C or 36C across southern and central England, extending from Gloucestershire to East Anglia, and 33C or 34C in Wales and northern England. Monday is also expected to be warm, with temperatures possibly reaching 33C in eastern England and South Yorkshire, and 31C in the north-west.

Temperature anomaly maps indicate that temperatures in the UK, especially in England and Wales, are forecasted to rise significantly above the seasonal average during this period. The GFS model suggests that 16 counties in England could experience temperatures exceeding 35C next week.

The Met Office forecasts that tomorrow will be cooler compared to the recent days but still pleasant with bright or sunny intervals. Clouds moving southwards may bring isolated showers, potentially turning thundery. Sunday’s temperatures are expected to be close to the seasonal average, with most areas remaining dry, though some sporadic rain is possible in the north. The Met Office anticipates temperatures to trend above the seasonal norm once again in the upcoming week.
