“Thrift Store Find: Rare David Hockney Artwork Sells for £41K”

Date:

An exceptionally rare discovery at a thrift store has fetched over £41,000 in a recent sale. At a charity shop in Norwich run by The Salvation Army, a volunteer came across a donated book containing an original signed print by the late David Hockney, a renowned artist who passed away at the age of 88.

Last year, a copy of the book “Paper Pools” was handed in, catching the attention of volunteer Jemma Banks, who is also a local artist. Inside the book, after flipping through the pages, she unearthed an original signed print that had been nestled inside for 46 years.

Following research conducted by the Salvation Army Trading Company and their eBay store, the book was put up for auction on The Salvation Army’s Collectables & Curiosity eBay shop. Bidding swiftly escalated, culminating in the artwork being sold for an impressive £41,160 to an undisclosed buyer who expressed great satisfaction with the acquisition.

The buyer shared, “I’ve been an admirer of David Hockney’s art for many years, so acquiring such an iconic piece is truly special. I’m thrilled that this purchase will also contribute to supporting The Salvation Army’s vital work, making a meaningful impact on people’s lives.”

Reflecting on the find, Ms. Banks remarked, “It was a privilege to come across a genuine signed David Hockney print and see how well it had been preserved inside the book for almost five decades. As a local artist, I had a sense that the book might hold some significance, but I never anticipated its true value. It’s gratifying to know that something hidden away for so long will now benefit those in need within our community.”

Published in 1980, “Paper Pools” showcases some of Hockney’s acclaimed swimming pool artworks, with the original signed print making it an exceedingly rare collectible, according to The Salvation Army.

Major Tracey Bale, who oversees The Salvation Army’s Norwich Citadel, praised Jemma’s keen eye for recognizing the unique item, emphasizing the importance of volunteers’ dedication and expertise in handling donations that occasionally reveal extraordinary stories.

David Hockney, a revered British artist, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, leaving a legacy of innovative artistry that included embracing digital mediums alongside traditional painting. Trained at the Bradford School of Art and the Royal College of Art, Hockney emerged as a leading figure among the new wave of British artists in the 1960s.
