Paramedic Hammer Attack Leads to Prison Sentence

Date:

A man has been sentenced to imprisonment following a violent assault on paramedics using a claw hammer that was recorded on video footage. The incident occurred in Bristol, where ambulance crews were providing emergency medical assistance but were forced to flee when the perpetrator, James Chandler, attempted to attack them with the weapon.

Initially engaging with the medical team, Chandler suddenly armed himself with a hammer and launched a dangerous attack as the paramedics tried to leave the scene. The bodycam footage captured the alarming moment when a paramedic narrowly avoided being struck by the hammer.

The crew had to quickly retreat for their safety and trigger an emergency alert. Subsequently, Avon and Somerset Police apprehended Chandler, who admitted to assaulting an emergency worker and wielding an offensive weapon.

At Bristol Crown Court, Chandler was handed a 16-month prison sentence with a requirement to serve a minimum of 40% of the term before being considered for release. Judge Mr. Justice Picton emphasized the fear and danger inflicted by Chandler’s actions on his victim.

The targeted paramedic expressed concern over the lack of safety while carrying out their duties, especially in a caring profession where instances of verbal abuse are unfortunately common, and physical abuse, though less frequent, remains a serious risk.

The crime and violence reduction manager at South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, Mike Jones, condemned the attack as a severe threat to the lives of ambulance staff. He stressed the importance of healthcare workers being able to perform their duties without the fear of violence, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward such assaults.

Jones highlighted the increasing trend of healthcare workers facing violence while on duty and affirmed the commitment to collaborating with law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable. The priority remains on supporting staff and implementing measures to ensure their safety while serving communities in the South West.
