An elderly couple, Colin and Claudette Geraghty, who fled a care home they dislike, have not returned even after a week. The couple’s daughter, Linda McKelvie, has appealed for them to go back to Ryman Nellie Melba Retirement Village in Melbourne, Australia, from where they disappeared on July 11 and were later found in Maryborough, approximately 118 miles away.
Despite their daughter’s pleas, Colin, 89, and Claudette, 83, remain at a motel and are adamant about not returning to the nursing home. Linda described her father as a sharp and intelligent man capable of staying ahead of those trying to locate them. She emphasized the importance of the care home’s support for her parents, who have been married for 65 years and have multiple children together.
Linda disclosed that her parents are firm on staying at the motel due to their dissatisfaction with the care home arrangements. She praised their strong bond, referring to it as a remarkable love story. She expressed uncertainty about their next steps, hinting that they might attempt another escape.
The couple’s relocation to an aged-care facility was prompted by Claudette’s health needs, as she requires constant care due to seizures and vascular dementia. Despite medical advice, the change unsettled them as they are resistant to change. Colin, still a capable driver, took them on a road trip in a 2015 Mazda 2 before settling at the motel.
Their abrupt departure has caused concern among their family, who have urged them to return through text messages. However, the Geraghty pair has chosen to remain at the motel, with Colin reassuring his family of their well-being in a message sent on the day they left, promising to take care of Claudette.
