The latest research by the High Pay Centre reveals that the average top executive in the UK’s largest companies now earns 130 times more than a typical worker, marking an increase from the previous year’s 124 times. This widening gap is at its highest point in eight years, with chief executives of FTSE 100 companies receiving a median pay and perks package of over £5 million annually, showing an 8.6% rise from £4.66 million in the previous year.
Andrew Speke, the interim director at the High Pay Centre, highlighted the concerning trend of growing disparity in executive and worker pay, emphasizing the need for attention to this issue. He expressed concern that executive pay has been consistently rising for the fourth consecutive year, significantly outpacing the growth in worker pay.
In a message directed at the newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Speke urged for a shift towards economic fairness to address the increasing economic inequality and excessive corporate compensation. The research also noted that 66 FTSE 100 companies raised their chief executive’s pay packages, totaling £856.6 million, with £550.4 million allocated to CEOs.
While many companies defend high executive pay as necessary for attracting top talent and global competitiveness, the High Pay Centre proposes a “fat cat tax” to address the issue. This tax would impose a surcharge on firms exceeding a specified multiple of the median UK worker’s salary, potentially generating funds for education and reducing inequality.
Additionally, the High Pay Centre advocates for broader reforms, such as increased employee representation in company decision-making and greater transparency in reporting pay information, including the number of workers earning below a living wage.
