A massive fire is currently tearing through a popular tourist area in Italy, leading to the evacuation of over 100 individuals. The wildfire has spread to Santo Stefano Quisquina town in the Agrigento province, close to Palermo in Sicily. Surrounding regions near this holiday destination are heavily impacted, with thick clouds of smoke rising into the air.
As a precautionary measure, more than 100 people have been evacuated, with concerns raised about the proximity of an oxygen depot, medical clinic, petrol station, and fireworks factory to the flames. A significant firefighting operation is underway, involving specialized firefighting aircraft known as Canadairs.
The fire’s intensity is fueled by sirocco winds, a hot and dry wind originating from the Sahara Desert and moving northward across the Mediterranean Sea into southern Europe. The mayor of Santo Stefano di Quisquina, Francesco Cacciatore, has described the situation as “dramatic” according to L’Unione Sarda. Residents in the Canfuto and Bosco districts have been urged to evacuate immediately, with road closures in place on the 118 state road Corleonese Agrigentina.
Elsewhere in Agrigento, the flames have reportedly reached the Andromeda Theatre’s edge. Additional wildfires have erupted in Catania, prompting firefighting responses to at least 11 separate incidents. Along the motorway connecting Palermo and Catania, fires have been reported, leading to several power outages in central Palermo. Families not directly in the fire’s path have barricaded themselves indoors to avoid smoke infiltration.
Reports indicate that the intense heat caused railings and doorknobs to become red-hot. Smoke has engulfed multiple neighborhoods, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the city by 4 am.
