A recent study from University College London suggests that financial difficulties may accelerate brain aging, especially in men. The research analyzed data from the 1946 British cohort study, involving 2,759 participants. Those classified as having persistent low income, falling within the bottom 20% at least twice, which constituted about one in six individuals, experienced cognitive performance decline at age 53. Additionally, brain scans indicated that individuals with lower incomes exhibited poorer brain health, with men showing a stronger correlation.
The study points to chronic stress from financial struggles as a potential factor impacting cognitive processing systems. Professor Praveetha Patalay of UCL emphasized the importance of supporting those facing financial hardship to mitigate cognitive decline and reduce dementia cases in the future.
Furthermore, researchers suggest that financial challenges in adulthood may affect cognitive functions such as attention and decision-making by consuming cognitive “bandwidth.” The study utilized data from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development, assessing household incomes at ages 26, 43, and 53.
Men who faced financial hardships in both childhood and adulthood were identified as being at the highest risk of accelerated brain aging. The study, published in Innovations in Aging, underscores the significance of aiding vulnerable households amid a cost-of-living crisis.
Dr. Jacques Wels from UCL highlighted the long-term impact of accumulated financial hardship on cognitive health outcomes. The findings were supported by Dr. Richard Oakley from the Alzheimer’s Society, who emphasized the social and economic dimensions of dementia and the importance of addressing modifiable risk factors to potentially delay or prevent cases of dementia globally. Oakley stressed the need to promote healthier lifestyles and address societal inequalities to safeguard brain health and reduce the impact of dementia, the leading cause of death in the UK.
