A government official has been fired following the circulation of images showing him in cycling tights while riding his bicycle, which led to a series of objections from fellow cyclists.
Mehmet Fatih Cicekli, the governor of Ardahan province in eastern Turkey, was removed from his position on July 17 through a presidential order signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The decision came after some Turkish politicians criticized him for donning cycling tights at a public event promoting the sport and for sharing the photos on social media.
During a recent television discussion in Turkey, Inan Akgun Alp, a member of the main opposition Republican People’s Party, accused Mr. Cicekli of giving more importance to social media over his official responsibilities. Alp also deemed the tight-fitting attire inappropriate for a governor, stating, “A governor should not move around the city center in this manner.”
Samil Tayyar from Erdogan’s ruling party remarked that the governor’s outfit went against cultural standards, especially in a conservative region like Ardahan. He pointed out that other politicians opted for looser clothing such as jogging bottoms when cycling.
Mr. Cicekli, who assumed his governorship in January under Erdogan’s appointment, defended his choice of attire by claiming it was standard cycling gear. He reiterated his commitment to sports, mentioning his involvement in sailing, rowing, and cycling, and stated that the clothing he wore was intended for sports activities.
Despite facing criticism, a petition seeking his reinstatement has garnered over 10,000 signatures. Supporters argue that he played a significant role in promoting sports, youth initiatives, and bicycle tourism.
In a heartfelt farewell to his backers in Ardahan, Mr. Cicekli expressed gratitude, stating, “I believe that I have not disappointed those who supported me and stood by me on my journey so far. I consider this the greatest honor of all.”
As he departed the province, Mr. Cicekli was surrounded by local cyclists showing their support, as reported by Halk TV.
Nacho Sanchez Amor, a member of the European Parliament from Spain responsible for monitoring Turkey, voiced his support for Mr. Cicekli. He suggested that Mr. Alp’s criticisms were in line with the ruling party’s conservative Islamist agenda.
