Angry naturists are exploring legal options against leisure center management, accusing them of discrimination for canceling their long-standing naked swim session after over 40 years. The Northampton Sun Club, comprising around 200 members, expressed dismay at the sudden decision to disallow their monthly dip at Mounts Baths, which they had exclusively booked since 1982.
The group, known for their swim and sauna gatherings, has been informed by the new operators, Everyone Active, that a new clothing-on policy is in effect due to staffing challenges. Despite paying £10 per person for the swim session inclusive of sauna and other facilities, the naturists are disheartened by the lack of alternatives presented by the management.
Chairwoman Maggie Moreton criticized the decision, highlighting the group’s longstanding booking history and private nature of the sessions, which have attracted diverse participants over the years. The sudden ban on nude swimming has left members feeling alienated and contemplating potential legal action to address the situation.
Treasurer David Farnsworth condemned the decision, labeling it as discriminatory and misunderstanding the club’s activities. He emphasized the club’s adherence to safety protocols and expressed disappointment on behalf of the over 190 members who cherish the liberating experience of naked swimming.
The leisure operator, Everyone Active, defended their stance, citing staffing constraints as the reason for discontinuing the naturist swim sessions. Regional contract manager Simon Fearn acknowledged the disappointment caused by the change but affirmed the company’s commitment to reviewing the situation should circumstances evolve in the future.
