“Chancellor Healey Prioritizes British Goods and Jobs”

Date:

Government departments have been instructed by Chancellor John Healey to prioritize purchasing British goods and services, aiming to bolster local employment. He emphasized a strong commitment to supporting British jobs, apprenticeships, and skills through government spending, stating his intention to replicate the successful procurement strategy he implemented at the Ministry of Defence across all sectors.

During an interview with The Sun, Mr. Healey highlighted that during his time as Defence Secretary, a significant majority of major defense contracts were awarded to British companies. He stressed the importance of government policies and decisions in enhancing investment, innovation, and profitability within the British business landscape.

In collaboration with Prime Minister Andy Burnham, the government announced initiatives such as eliminating VAT on household electricity bills, implementing a £2 cap on bus fares outside London, and reducing business rates for pubs and small music venues by 20% to support struggling businesses. When questioned about funding, Mr. Healey emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility and maintaining economic stability.

The Chancellor is preparing to present his inaugural Budget in the autumn following the departure of Rachel Reeves from the role. A key challenge will be securing £5 billion to support additional spending in the defense investment plan. While the government has yet to establish a timeline for reaching a target of 3% of the UK’s GDP for defense spending, Mr. Healey emphasized that this issue would be addressed in due course.

Prime Minister Burnham expressed his commitment to creating an inclusive society where everyone is respected and valued. He swiftly implemented measures to ease financial burdens on the public, but emphasized that his ultimate goal is to ensure that individuals not only exist but thrive.
