He highlighted his disappointment in the lack of attention to crucial social care matters since Labour’s return to power.
Burnham, whose father suffers from Alzheimer’s and resides in a care facility, is anticipated to unveil his stance on social care imminently. Streeting, a former Social Care Secretary, cited achievements such as the significant expansion of Carer’s Allowance and increased investment in disabled facilities grants. However, he lamented the inadequate focus on social care within the government’s agenda, stressing the necessity to address the purpose and funding of social care, historically considered a contentious issue in British politics.
Acknowledging Burnham’s leadership significance, Streeting anticipated the new leader’s prioritization of social care and his forthcoming detailed strategy to address the crisis, resonating with the public. Burnham is poised to declare a commitment to “face it and fix it,” aiming to fulfill promises unmet by previous administrations.
Unlike NHS services, social care involves substantial costs, leading individuals to potentially sell their homes to cover expenses. Those with savings exceeding £23,250 are ineligible for financial aid from local councils. Burnham has pledged to leverage his political influence to address these challenges.
Recent data revealed a surge in hospital stays due to the lack of available social care, a 70% increase since 2021. A government source emphasized Burnham’s proactive approach in tackling neglected issues, instilling hope and a renewed belief in government efficacy in enhancing people’s lives.
Baroness Louise Casey leads a review on adult social care, with initial recommendations expected later this year and subsequent reports in 2028. Starmer endorsed the commission’s role in initiating a national dialogue on social care provision and funding, underscoring the imperative of addressing these critical societal concerns.
