More than 200 refugee organizations have urged Andy Burnham to reject ineffective tactics aimed at asylum seekers. The groups have written a letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to scrap proposals to accommodate thousands of individuals on former military sites, permit them to work, and abandon the idea of a £10,000 “refugee tax.” They also called on Mr. Burnham to challenge damaging narratives about asylum seekers and enhance secure pathways like family reunification.
Various organizations, such as Doctors of the World UK, Freedom from Torture, City of Sanctuary, and Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI), emphasized that past attempts to escalate hostility towards refugees have not garnered public trust or political success. They have witnessed the adverse impacts on the individuals they support due to these misguided efforts for political gain.
In response to a plea from senior religious figures to dilute the government’s plans, Asylum Matters’ head of campaigns, Nathan Phillips, highlighted the failure of previous administrations in solving asylum system issues with antagonism. The organizations stress the need for a welcoming and efficient asylum system devoid of costly and ineffective measures.
Despite calls for change, Mr. Burnham has reaffirmed the government’s stance by re-appointing Shabana Mahmood as Home Secretary. Mahmood has introduced reforms to enhance the fairness of the asylum system, including temporary refugee status based on regular assessments and a proposed fee of around £10,000 for those permitted to remain in the UK.
Controversial measures under consideration include delaying asylum seekers’ eligibility for indefinite leave to remain to 20 years, which has sparked opposition among Labour MPs. Charities are advocating for asylum seekers to be housed within communities instead of expanding the use of military sites and for lifting the current ban on asylum seekers working.
The government argues that allowing asylum seekers to work could incentivize dangerous small boat crossings. The charities have called for an independent inquiry into the use of UK taxes contributing to escalating violence and fatalities in the Channel, emphasizing evidence-based solutions and adherence to international law.
A Home Office spokesperson emphasized the UK’s commitment to providing protection to those fleeing persecution while ensuring a balanced immigration system. The upcoming Immigration and Asylum Bill aims to clamp down on asylum system abuse and reform human rights laws to safeguard individuals in need.
