A couple from the UK made a significant move to a more affordable country just a few hours away and encountered a couple of issues. With budget-friendly flights starting at £34 and a travel time of 4 hours and 43 minutes, Cyprus is a popular destination for British holidaymakers and expatriates. Donna Curley and her husband Nick were attracted to this Eastern Mediterranean country.
Having established themselves in Derbyshire, Donna and Nick began considering Cyprus as their future home. In 2013, they purchased a one-bedroom holiday property in Kapparis. Their frequent visits to the island revealed its relaxed atmosphere, which deeply resonated with them.
Donna, 49, transitioned from being a fitness instructor in Derby to teaching online during the pandemic. Nick, who was born at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, served as an Army reservist.
When Nick’s adult children from his previous marriage reached their twenties, the couple decided it was the right time for a fresh start. They sold their home in Holbrook, acquired a property in Avgorou, and started planning a wellness retreat, despite facing some challenges along the way.
Donna mentioned to The Times that forming new friendships was more challenging than anticipated due to the already established expat social circles. However, she acknowledged the increasing number of British individuals relocating to Cyprus for tax advantages and a better lifestyle.
Their move to Cyprus aimed to create more quality time together, although the reality has not fully met their expectations yet. Donna emphasized the need to adapt to challenges that come with significant moves and embraced the gradual pace, known as “siga siga” in Greek.
The couple’s new residence is a two-bedroom bungalow with a pool and 3,000sqm of land. While focusing on establishing their wellness venture, Nick and Donna have taken on various jobs to sustain their income.
Living costs in Cyprus are generally lower, although food prices can be surprisingly high. By utilizing solar power and well water, they have reduced major expenses typically associated with utility bills, except during colder seasons when they rely on a wood-burner for warmth and occasionally use a backup generator.
Their story mirrors that of another British family who recently discussed their move to Cyprus due to dissatisfaction with long work hours, high expenses, and safety concerns in the UK. Sarah, a former educator, and James, an IT specialist, found Cyprus to be a beautiful and fulfilling escape from their previous struggles.
