Royal Household’s Top Aide to Step Down

Date:

Sir Clive Alderton, the most senior aide and right-hand man to the King, has announced his decision to step down next year as he approaches his 60th birthday in May. Having served the Royal Household for two decades, Alderton, currently fulfilling the role of principal private secretary to Charles and Queen Camilla, expressed his gratitude to the King and Queen for the honor of serving during significant historical events. He mentioned that although he will be departing from his current position, he plans to continue offering support in a more informal capacity.

Alderton’s influential tenure within the British Royal Household began in 1986 in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, leading to diplomatic roles in various countries before transitioning to become a key advisor to Charles. His journey included serving as the UK’s Ambassador to Morocco before returning to royal duties in 2015. With his appointment as Principal Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, Alderton assumed the role of Charles’s top aide, and upon Charles’s ascension to the throne following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, he moved to Buckingham Palace as the King’s Private Secretary.

Throughout his time as the King’s principal private secretary, Alderton navigated significant events, such as the King’s cancer diagnosis and crucial state visits, including a notable trip to Washington DC to meet with former US President Donald Trump. Not only did he manage official matters, but he also played a role in handling personal issues, notably assisting with the aftermath of Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back from their royal duties.

Although Alderton’s approach has garnered praise from some, it has also drawn criticism, particularly from Prince Harry, who reportedly referred to him as one of the “men in grey suits” within the Palace. Despite any controversies, the King and Queen have expressed their appreciation for Alderton’s dedication and guidance over the years, ensuring a smooth transition for his successor. The announcement of Alderton’s departure aims to kickstart the recruitment process for a new principal private secretary, with plans for a seamless handover once the successor is appointed.
