A tragic incident unfolded in Cornwall as a mother, Tasmin Paterson, 31, took the life of her nine-year-old son, Hudson Paterson, before ending her own life. The bodies of the mother and son were discovered in their residence in the Fletchersbridge area of Bodmin in September 2024.
During the inquest into their deaths, it was revealed that the relationship between Ms. Paterson and her partner, Marcus Hughes, had deteriorated significantly before the tragic event. Mr. Hughes found the lifeless bodies of the mother and son in a bedroom they shared.
The inquest disclosed that Ms. Paterson had previously separated amicably from Hudson’s father. Living with Mr. Hughes, their relationship became strained after she discovered him on a dating site, adding to existing tensions due to her health issues, financial difficulties, and housing concerns.
Mr. Hughes admitted to the inquest that their relationship had encountered challenges, leading to a breakdown. He acknowledged that Ms. Paterson had confronted him about the dating site incident and cited her ongoing health problems, a past head injury, mobility issues, and other stressors as contributing factors.
The night before the tragedy, Hudson was unwell, prompting his mother to sleep in the same room with him, a common practice for them. Mr. Hughes grew worried the next morning when they did not awaken, eventually discovering their bodies after forcibly entering the locked bedroom.
Family members described Ms. Paterson as a devoted mother, emphasizing that there were no prior indications she would harm her son. Her ex-husband, Aaron Paterson, praised her love for Hudson and denied any suspicions of her causing harm.
