Britons are in for scorching temperatures on Wednesday, expected to soar up to 35C. The forecast indicates that Wednesday will be the hottest day of the week, prompting amber heat health alerts for regions including the East Midlands, East of England, London, and Southeast England. Additionally, yellow heat health alerts are in place for the South West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & The Humber.
The Met Office anticipates the heatwave conditions to persist throughout the week, with the likelihood of meeting the heatwave threshold across most UK regions. Counties like Berkshire, Surrey, and Buckinghamshire are expected to experience the highest temperatures on Wednesday.
While Monday saw relatively warm weather with temperatures peaking at 28C at Heathrow Airport, Wednesday is projected to be significantly hotter, especially in the capital. However, the soaring temperatures pose an increased risk of wildfires, a concern that has been prevalent in the UK and across Europe. In France, hundreds of thousands have been evacuated due to wildfires, with President Emmanuel Macron describing the situation as the country’s most challenging since World War II.
Meanwhile, firefighters have been battling a fierce wildfire in the Cairngorms for over 10 days, prompting evacuations. Despite this, Scotland is not expected to experience the same level of heat as parts of England and Wales, with southern areas and Northern Ireland likely to see showers on Wednesday.
As Thursday approaches, temperatures are expected to cool across most parts of the UK, except for the Southeast of England where temperatures may still reach 29C, meeting the heatwave criteria. Gregory Wolverson, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, mentioned that while the heatwave will be brief, temperatures will rise swiftly in the first half of the week, particularly in the southeast.
He added, “By Wednesday, some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30Cs, and while the heat won’t be widespread across the UK, parts of the southeast are likely to meet the official heatwave criteria by Thursday. Elsewhere, the weather will be more changeable, with cooler and unsettled conditions arriving sooner from the north and west, bringing a mix of sunshine and showers. Northern areas might experience heavier showers with a slight risk of isolated thunderstorms throughout the week.”
