A couple in Massachusetts, David and Ina Steiner, have received a substantial payout of nearly £37.5 million from eBay following allegations of harassment by former company employees. The settlement, which includes an additional £5.27 million earmarked for charitable donations, marks the conclusion of a long-standing legal dispute that started in 2021.
The Steiners, who are well-known as the founders of EcommerceBytes, a prominent newsletter covering e-commerce, were subjected to a relentless campaign of intimidation, cyberstalking, and threats by ex-eBay workers. Their lawsuit filed in a Boston court detailed a conspiracy by the company to silence them and impede their reporting activities.
This resolution not only compensates the Steiners but also holds eBay accountable for the misconduct of its former executives involved in the case. The company has acknowledged the wrongful actions of its past leadership, including former CEO Devin Wenig, former Chief Communications Officer Steve Wymer, and former Senior Vice President Wendy Jones.
In response to the settlement, eBay expressed regret over the incidents that occurred in 2019 and emphasized that such behavior is not reflective of its organizational culture. The company has since implemented changes in leadership and enhanced its internal policies and ethics training to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
In 2020, seven former eBay employees faced legal charges for orchestrating a coordinated harassment scheme against the Steiners in retaliation for unfavorable coverage in their newsletter. Most of the defendants pleaded guilty to charges like conspiracy and cyberstalking, leading to various legal consequences.
As part of the settlement terms, eBay agreed to pay a $3 million criminal penalty in 2024 under a deferred prosecution agreement with federal authorities. The harassment tactics employed against the couple included anonymous deliveries of disturbing items like insects, a funeral wreath, and a grotesque pig mask, as well as plans for intrusive actions such as installing a GPS device on their car.
Christopher Murphy, the Steiners’ lawyer, highlighted the significance of the resolution in exposing corporate misconduct and ensuring accountability. He emphasized the importance of transparency in such cases and the need to deter similar behaviors in the future.
This outcome serves as a clear message that companies and their executives will face severe repercussions for engaging in unethical conduct, underscoring the importance of upholding integrity and ethical standards in business practices.
