The UK is set to experience a return of heatwave conditions today, with temperatures potentially reaching as high as 36C in some areas.
This marks the fourth heatwave of the year, although today’s heat is expected to be more localized compared to previous occurrences.
According to the GFS weather model, parts of East Anglia and the south-east could see highs of 36C, while much of eastern and south-eastern England may experience temperatures around 35C.
Forecasts suggest that the Midlands might reach temperatures of 32-33C, with a possibility of 31C in Yorkshire. Wales could see highs of 25C, while Northern Ireland and Scotland are expected to be cooler.
Temperature anomaly maps indicate that central, eastern, and southern England are likely to see temperatures well above the seasonal average today.
Officially, a heatwave is declared when temperatures exceed the threshold for three consecutive days. The threshold varies from 28C in London to 25C in other regions. Consequently, heatwave conditions are mainly anticipated in England this week.
The GFS model suggests that 11 English counties may experience temperatures of 35C or higher today.
The Met Office predicts that the current hot spell will be brief and not widespread across the entire UK. Temperatures are expected to decrease towards the weekend.
By Friday, temperatures are forecasted to return closer to average levels for most of the UK, with slightly below-average temperatures in the northern regions. The southern areas are likely to remain warmer due to high-pressure systems, although the temperatures will be notably lower than midweek highs.
