After a national emergency declaration in Spain earlier this week, residents have been issued a new warning due to ongoing wildfires in the country.
As wildfires continue to ravage parts of Spain, thousands of people were evacuated from their homes, although many have now been allowed to return. The national weather agency of Spain issued a fresh alert on Wednesday, cautioning about the possibility of more wildfires. The agency’s message, initially released in Spanish, states: “Due to the new heatwave, the fire risk is expected to be very high or extreme across most of the nation.
“Extreme precautions are advised.” Temperatures are set to soar to 41C in the central province of Toledo today, where residents from nine out of 11 evacuated towns were cleared to return home on Tuesday.
Madrid is preparing for temperatures of up to 38C, while Zaragoza is expected to reach 40C, as per the Met Office. Seville, Malaga, and Palma are forecasted to have highs of 37C, 33C, and 33C, respectively.
While the UK government has not issued a general warning for Spain, it advises holidaymakers to stay vigilant. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is urging British citizens in wildfire-affected regions to “heed instructions from local authorities and emergency services; monitor updates from emergency services; and dial 112 in case of emergencies”.
Spain’s Interior Minister reminded the public on Tuesday to remain cautious, emphasizing that “a small spark, a moment of negligence, or a mistake can have serious consequences”. The FCDO guidelines emphasize the importance of properly extinguishing cigarette butts, refraining from lighting barbecues, and not leaving behind empty bottles. Violating rules against lighting outdoor barbecues in forested areas can result in significant fines.
“Familiarize yourself with the regulations before considering a barbecue.”
