Wendy’s, a well-known fast-food chain that originated in 1969, is set to close around 350 of its stores as part of a new strategic plan. Currently operating over 7,000 locations globally, with a significant presence of more than 5,830 stores in the United States, the burger-chain aims to shut approximately five to six percent of its stores by 2026.
One recent closure took place at the Wendy’s restaurant located at 4003 Wilmington Pike in Kettering, Ohio. A closure notice displayed on the door stated, “This location is permanently closed.” Additionally, another Wendy’s store in the Drayton area, specifically the Moraine store, ceased operations within four months.
While specific details regarding the other store closures have not been disclosed by Wendy’s, the company’s CEO, Ken Cook, mentioned during a fourth-quarter earnings call that the closures of underperforming restaurants are part of the Project Fresh initiative. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing profitability and improving franchisee economics by focusing on locations with higher potential for growth.
Wendy’s reported a 5.5% decline in global system-wide sales, primarily driven by a 7.8% decrease in the US in the first quarter. The chain’s first store was established in Ohio in 1969 by its founder, Dave Thomas.
