Maria Zuber, the head of the EU’s Emergency Response Co-ordination Centre, has issued a warning that the entire continent could be at risk of wildfires in the coming days. Zuber expressed concerns that the wildfires could soon reach Greece and Central Europe. She highlighted the imminent risk in Italy at the beginning of August and the potential danger for the Iberian Peninsula, stating that if the fires spread there, the whole of Europe could be engulfed in flames.
Tragically, three firefighters lost their lives while battling wildfires in Greece. The fires have spread to various regions, including Crete, Paros, Lesvos, and mainland Greece. Efforts to contain the fires are ongoing, with firefighters facing challenging conditions.
In Gironde, a massive fire that ravaged 42,000 hectares remains stable after a relatively calm night. Cooler temperatures and expected showers provide some relief, although the region is still at risk. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further devastation.
The heatwave has led to high temperatures, with an expected drop from scorching highs to more manageable levels. Officials are cautiously optimistic about the weather conditions improving, offering hope for the affected regions.
