“Funeral Director’s Deceptive Acts Unveiled in Shocking Trial”

Date:

Robert Bush, a funeral director, has been described by one of his victims as transitioning from a “consummate professional” to a “Frankenstein” figure. Karen Dry, who spoke in a video about Bush’s wrongdoings, expressed her hope for justice to be served. She mentioned her uncertainty about whether she actually received her parents’ ashes.

Bush is currently facing sentencing at Hull Crown Court for more than 65 offenses committed over a 12-year period, impacting hundreds of victims and their families. In the video interview, Ms. Dry recalled Bush’s initial charm and professionalism, which later revealed his true deceptive nature. She emphasized the challenge of verifying ashes due to their untestable nature.

Another victim, Lucy Ness, shared her experience of being given animal remains instead of her baby’s ashes by Bush. Ness initially found Bush to be pleasant and helpful over the phone, leading her to trust him. However, she later discovered the disturbing truth, causing her trauma to resurface.

Kevin Moxon, owner of Moxon’s Funeral Directors, exposed unsettling findings after Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, run by Bush, was raided in March 2024. The discoveries included bodies in various stages of decomposition and incorrect ashes given to grieving families.

Bush’s crimes were uncovered when police found unidentified ashes in deteriorating boxes at his premises more than two years ago. He has pleaded guilty to 67 offenses, including preventing lawful burials, fraud, fraudulent trading, and theft. The court has heard that Bush spent a substantial amount on holidays while deceiving families.

The sentencing hearing for Bush, expected to last five days, will include over 100 victim impact statements. Evidence presented in court revealed that Bush fraudulently obtained funds for unauthorized funeral plans and provided incorrect ashes to families. Financial transactions totaling millions of pounds were traced to Legacy and Bush’s personal accounts, indicating discrepancies in reported turnover.

The case has prompted a closer examination of the funeral industry’s practices, highlighting the need for stricter regulations and oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.
