Ten climbers are missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak, the 12th highest mountain globally in Pakistan. The group, led by Nirmal Purja, a Nepali mountaineer and ex-British Marine, lost contact after the avalanche on Thursday. The Alpine Club of Pakistan reported that five Nepalese climbers, including Purja, and Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi are among those missing.
The President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Major General Irfan Arshad, stated that the club is coordinating with government officials for the search and rescue mission. Efforts are being made to dispatch helicopters and other relief resources promptly to the affected area.
Broad Peak, standing at 8,051 meters (26,414 feet) above sea level, is renowned as one of the most challenging peaks for climbers. Purja, also known as Nimsdai, achieved fame for conquering all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters in just 189 days. The 43-year-old received an MBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 2018 for his exceptional military service in high-risk environments.
