A massive 100-hectare wildfire is being battled by approximately 120 firefighters with 18 engines.
Around 47 individuals, including infants, along with five dogs, a cat, and a mouse, were evacuated from lodges and caravans at Cliff House holiday park near Dunwich Heath when the fire erupted on Wednesday evening. They were swiftly relocated to a temporary rescue center at Westleton Village Hall, where the compassionate community provided them with food, shelter, and care.
Among those evacuated was a mother-of-two from Southampton, who shared the frantic evacuation of her family from their static caravan, leaving behind her children’s shoes in the rush. The unfolding events were described as frightening, with the smoke rapidly changing direction due to the shifting winds.
Jude Bayly, a 73-year-old midwife from north London, recounted the chaotic packing as she fled her caravan, eventually spending the night in her car, surrounded by encroaching smoke and flames. The situation was described as apocalyptic by Rob Gordon from Spalding, Lincolnshire, who, along with his wife and dog, had to evacuate due to the approaching wildfire.
Westleton Village Hall became a haven for evacuees, including Barry Banks, a local resident who offered shelter to 47 displaced individuals. The fire has spread to a portion of the RSPB Minsmere reserve, raising concerns about its proximity to the Sizewell B nuclear power station. Officials are grappling with the challenge of containing the fire, estimating the firefighting efforts could span from 24 to 36 hours.
Residents are advised to keep windows and doors shut as a precaution, with the possibility of further evacuations looming. Chief Fire Officer Jon Lacey of the Suffolk Fire Service acknowledged the complexity of the situation, emphasizing the rapid pace of the fire’s movement and the ongoing efforts to manage it effectively.
