Eight bikers who made a stop for ice cream at a scenic spot in North Wales have been issued fines amounting to nearly £1,000. The group, hailing from Devon, fell afoul of newly installed cameras at Llyn Tegid, Bala, in Eryri National Park, commonly known as Snowdonia, aimed at preventing overnight camping.
Each of the eight motorcyclists is facing two fines of £60 each after stopping twice to purchase ice creams before realizing the updated parking regulations, resulting in a total fine of £960 for the group. One of the bikers expressed disappointment on a local forum, mentioning their long history of visiting the area and their surprise at the sudden parking fees.
A petition has been launched urging Eryri National Park Authority (ENPA) to provide free access to the lake’s parking lots. Other motorists have also reported receiving fines after visiting on July 12, just before the ANPR cameras were activated, and are challenging the penalties. The parking fees at Llyn Tegid now stand at £5 for up to four hours and £8 for the daily rate, with separate charges for watersports users and adjusted allowances for Blue Badge holders.
Residents in Bala have raised concerns over the increased parking charges and fines, as well as the oversight of a private company managing the parking facilities. The community is advocating for free 24-hour access to the lake and has criticized the limited “local benefit” of an hour of free off-peak parking. The petition emphasizes the importance of outdoor access for all, especially children, and questions the lack of consultation with residents before implementing the new parking regulations.
ENPA has stated that the pilot scheme, running until the end of October, aims to assess the effectiveness of the new parking system and gather feedback for potential future changes. The initiative is intended to streamline parking management, ensure fee compliance, and enhance the overall visitor experience while addressing concerns about overnight camping.
