A massive great white shark measuring 13 feet long and weighing 100 stone was sighted unexpectedly near a popular beach off the coast of Florida, surprising scientists with its unusual behavior. The shark, named Breton, weighing around 1,400 pounds, has been swimming south this summer while other sharks typically head north for cooler waters and more food during this season. Great white sharks usually migrate from the Gulf of Mexico along Florida’s coast towards Canada each summer, but Breton’s movement has diverged from this norm.
On July 25, the apex predator was observed deviating from the usual path as its tracker signaled its presence near Daytona Beach, a well-known tourist destination. OCEARCH, monitoring the shark’s tracker, reported a “ping” signal when Breton’s dorsal fins surfaced for an extended period. According to John Tyminki, a data scientist at OCEARCH, sharks migrate north in the summer due to seasonal food sources and cooler water temperatures, but Breton’s behavior has been consistently surprising.
Breton, tagged in September 2014, has traveled over 52,000 miles in nearly six years, showcasing diverse movement patterns both near and offshore. Despite the conventional understanding that great white sharks should be in Canada or Cape Cod for seal hunting and lower water temperatures, Breton has ventured into warmer waters off the East coast of Florida, with temperatures reaching 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Scientists remain puzzled by Breton’s unique migration choices. Tyminki suggested that the shark might be diving deeper where the water is colder, potentially following seasonal fish schools. The recent sighting of a large shark circling a boat in Portugal on July 25, possibly a great white, adds to the intrigue surrounding shark behavior in various regions.
