Families planning trips with children are being advised to pay extra attention to the passports of minors before traveling, as there is a commonly overlooked rule that could cause complications.
For Brits who arrange spontaneous vacations or delay checking their passports until the last minute, there may be a need for urgent passport replacements if issues such as damage or insufficient validity arise.
While adults can expedite a passport replacement through the Passport Office’s one-day premium service, which typically allows for collection within around four hours, this service is exclusively for renewing adult passports and cannot be used for new passports or individuals under 16.
To swiftly obtain a new or replacement child passport, the fastest service available is the one-week fast track option, requiring an appointment at a passport office. Although next-day appointments are possible post-application, availability varies.
Airport transfer provider Welcome Pickups raised awareness of the issue during the busy summer holiday period, explaining that children’s passports cannot be expedited last minute due to safety measures mandating a waiting period of at least five working days in the Passport Office’s system before issuance.
It was also revealed that a significant number of UK passports have less than three months’ validity remaining, potentially causing travel issues to most countries from the UK. Additionally, over 350,000 passports issued more than a decade ago, while still valid, may be rejected for travel to the EU.
Alex Trimis, CEO of Welcome Pickups, emphasized the importance of adhering to children’s passport regulations, highlighting that scheduling an appointment for a new passport cannot be rushed as with adult passports. His advice is to check the issue date, not just the expiry date, especially for travels to Europe, and to initiate the passport renewal process promptly after booking a trip, rather than waiting until the last minute.
