Renowned fashion designer Elizabeth Emanuel has recently crafted a replica of Princess Diana’s 40-foot veil, which had been missing for over 40 years. The veil, originally designed by Elizabeth and her husband David, adorned Diana at her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral.
Despite Diana’s famous wedding gown being showcased at Kensington Palace and Althorp House, her veil had been absent from the exhibits. Commissioned by Renae Plant, the founder of the Princess Diana Museum, Elizabeth recreated the embroidered veil to mark the 45th anniversary of the royal wedding.
Elizabeth shared exclusive behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship that went into creating Diana’s original bridal gown. Describing the veil as the “Veil of Light,” Elizabeth emphasized its importance in completing Diana’s wedding look and preserving the magic of the occasion.
Collaborating with London-based embroidery house Hand & Lock, Elizabeth ensured the new veil closely matched the original, even using the initial measurements from 1981. The recreated veil will be part of a touring exhibition organized by Renae Plant, allowing the public a rare opportunity to admire this iconic piece.
David and Elizabeth Emanuel went to great lengths to keep Diana’s wedding gown design a secret until the wedding day. They destroyed their sketches after showing them to Diana and even crafted a backup dress to prevent any leaks. Diana never saw the second dress, which was identical to the first, showcasing their dedication to maintaining the surprise.
45 years after the royal wedding, the recreated veil will contribute to the enduring legacy of Diana’s iconic bridal look, ensuring that the enchantment of that day lives on for generations to come.
