The Met Office has issued an extended weather warning for thunderstorms in Northern Ireland. Initially set to start at midday, the yellow level warning has been rescheduled to begin at 9.15am and last until 9pm.
According to the warning, regions affected by the thunderstorms could experience floods, lightning, and hail today, with up to 30mm of rainfall anticipated within a two-hour period. The Met Office predicts potential flooding to homes and businesses, posing risks of structural damage. Driving conditions may deteriorate due to spray, standing water, and hail, leading to longer travel times.
The Met Office cautions that train services could face delays, buildings might be damaged by lightning strikes, and power outages are possible. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit, including essentials for power cuts.
To better handle power outages, the Met Office recommends assembling torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other necessary items in advance. In the event of lightning, individuals are advised to seek shelter in a safe enclosed location, avoid trees or tall structures, and move to lower ground if on elevated terrain.
