A popular social media figure hailing from Mexico was tragically gunned down during a live broadcast on a public street. Cesar Gastelum, renowned for his humorous content on TikTok with a following of 600,000 users, met his untimely demise while streaming outside a fast-food establishment in Culiacan, a city in the northwest region. The fatal incident occurred when two individuals on a motorcycle, both donning helmets, approached Gastelum and his companions, launching a fatal attack. Shockingly, the motorbike’s driver was captured firing a gun directly at Gastelum’s head in the live video feed.
Culiacan, situated in Sinaloa, Mexico, is a known hub for drug cartel activities, particularly the Sinaloa Cartel, where internal conflicts have fueled a surge in violence. A security official in Sinaloa state affirmed Gastelum’s tragic death and disclosed the initiation of a significant security campaign in response.
The unrest in Sinaloa escalated following the abduction of Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in 2024 by a member of former cartel head Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s family. Zambada was subsequently handed over to US authorities, leading to a clash between his faction of the cartel and the one led by Guzmán’s sons.
The situation worsened as violence spread, prompting US President Donald Trump to designate the Sinaloa Cartel and other groups as foreign terrorist organizations. The recent killing of influencer Cesar Gastelum mirrors the tragic 2025 murder of Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Marquez, who was fatally shot during a TikTok live session at her workplace in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Marquez, aged 23, fell victim to a gunman who entered the salon where she worked and opened fire, according to official reports. Mexican authorities disclosed the apprehension of Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” in Jalisco, linking him to the criminal activities associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Alvarez Ayala has been tied to Marquez’s killing and implicated in masterminding the murder of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo in November 2025.
