“From Johannesburg to Vancouver: A Tale of Resilience and Rediscovery”

Date:

Moving to a new city can be a mix of excitement and challenges. Caitlyn Moony shares her journey of relocating to Vancouver from Johannesburg in 2018. Initially drawn to the city’s beauty and the prospect of a fresh start, Moony soon faced the harsh reality of struggling to establish herself in a new environment.

Despite her initial enthusiasm, Moony found herself grappling with the absence of a support network and the elusive demand for “Canadian experience” in job opportunities. Working long hours in a basement apartment with thin walls and noisy neighbors, she began to resent the city for not meeting her expectations. Loneliness crept in as she yearned for a sense of community that seemed absent in Vancouver.

Seeking solace in familiar surroundings, Moony eventually left for London, where she found vibrancy and energy that resonated with her. However, she soon realized that Vancouver had left an indelible mark on her, shaping her into a more introspective and contemplative individual. Despite its flaws, Vancouver’s quieter charm and unique character began to appeal to Moony, prompting her to reconsider her relationship with the city.

Now, after a period of reflection and growth, Moony finds herself drawn back to Vancouver, acknowledging its imperfections but also craving the familiarity and connection it offers. As she returns to the city amidst a winter storm, she contemplates the possibility of rekindling her bond with Vancouver, hoping to rediscover a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Through her personal journey, Moony highlights the complexities of adjusting to a new place, finding oneself amidst challenges, and ultimately learning to embrace the idiosyncrasies of a city that may not be perfect but holds a special place in her heart.
