Frosty, a horse in dire straits, was saved from a frozen creek in Lehman Creek, nearly at death’s door, back in January. Thanks to the collective efforts of local communities and horse enthusiasts nationwide, he has made a remarkable recovery and is adjusting well to his new circumstances.
Initially discovered partially submerged in the icy waters near Cochin, Sask., Frosty was trapped and in need of urgent help. Rescued by the village’s mayor, Mark Pattinson, and his companion Ed Scott, Frosty’s condition upon rescue was dire. Despite the close call with considering euthanasia, Frosty showed resilience and managed to stand up and move to safety on his own.
Following the incident, Frosty, whose previous owner had passed away, required immediate medical attention. After multiple local horse owners declined to take him in, Leslie-Ann Smith, a compassionate local farmer, stepped forward to help. Witnessing Frosty’s emaciated and frost-covered state, Smith and her husband were determined to assist him in his journey to recovery.
Transported to Lakeland Veterinary Service for treatment, Frosty underwent extensive care for his injuries, including a hernia that had ruptured from his left leg due to the ordeal in the frozen creek. Despite the challenging recovery process involving numerous vet visits and therapies, support poured in from various sources, with donations covering Frosty’s medical expenses.
Months later, Frosty’s transformation is evident. Initially reserved and withdrawn, he now thrives in his new home at the Smith farm, showing affection and a playful demeanor. Becoming a local icon, Frosty recently made an appearance at the Tony Cote Summer Games and horse relay, showcasing his progress and newfound vitality. While Frosty’s past as a relay horse surfaced, Smith has no plans to return him to racing, prioritizing his ongoing care and well-being.
