Sony Pictures announced that the latest Spider-Man film, “Brand New Day,” set a new North American opening weekend record by grossing $360 million in ticket sales from theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Initially projected to earn $355 million in its debut weekend across 4,487 cinemas, the movie starring Tom Holland surpassed expectations on Sunday and exceeded the previous record set by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.
Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group’s chairman and CEO, expressed pride in this achievement, emphasizing that while records are meant to be broken, they are pleased to hold this title. Prior to “Avengers: Endgame,” no movie had crossed the $300 million mark in domestic opening weekends. The records were held by “Avengers: Infinity War” with $257 million in 2018 and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with $247 million in 2015. In 2021, despite the pandemic, the third Spider-Man film starring Holland, “No Way Home,” debuted with $260 million domestically and later reached $1.9 billion globally.
The successful performance of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” featuring common actors Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, contributed to an all-time high weekend for movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada. According to Rentrak, a box-office analytics company, the total domestic box office sales have surged by over 15% from the previous year, surpassing $6.2 billion to date.
